PFOUTZ GENEALOGY

 

This is our ancestry for Mary Ann Pfoutz of Kettle Creek, Leidy Township, Clinton County, Pennsylvania, USA, who married our John W. Wertz in 1846.  She was born 2/24/1829 and died 12/25/1915 in PA.  She was the daughter of Simeon Pfoutz & Susan Minich (Minnick?).  Simeon and Susannah Minich Pfoutz were the first white settlers on Kettle Creek. In 1813 they built a log home at the site of the present Alvin R. Bush Dam.

 

HANS MICHAEL PFAUTZ Mayor of Rohrbach Germany, near Sinsheim, in the Lower Neckar Valley, Rhenish Palatinate.  Wife unknown.  They had ??? children: (one was Hans Michael Pfautz b. 1681)

 

HANS MICHAEL PFAUTZ b. 1681, Rohrbach Germany, d. 1742/2, Lancaster County PA; m. c1702 Ursula Muehlenhauser b. 1682, d. 1772; they immigrated to America in 1727, having been an innkeeper at Rohrbach.  They were Lutherans, and had five children:

 

1.    Jacob Pfautz born c1703 Rohrbach Germany died after June 1762 (last record was sale of land in Germany township, York County PA). married Hagdalena ? c1721

 

2.    Hans Michael Pfautz, Jr. born 1709, Rohrbach Germany, died 1769 Warwick Township, Lancaster County PA; married c1733 Catherine Schlauch (Slough); converted to Dunker 1739; elected to ministry 1744; advanced to Bishop 1748.  Their eldest daughter, Anna Margaretha, married Andrew Hoover, the immigrant surname ancestor of President Herbert Hoover.  (The Hoovers moved from Frederick County MD to North Carolina in 1762.)

 

3.    Anna Margaheta Pfautz born 1712 in Rohrbach Germany died 1781 Strasburg Township, Lancaster County PA; married c1733 Augustine Wither; their sons were prominent gunsmiths and millers in Eighteenth Century Lancaster County.

 

4.    Anna Barbara Pfautz born c1715 in Rohrbach Germany, died 1790 Leacock Township, Lancaster County PA; married 1734 Jacob Heller; they had five sons, all substantial farmers in Lancaster County.

 

5.    JOHN PFOUTZ born c1717 in Rohrbach Germany, died c1790 Pfoutz Valley, Cumberland County (now Perry County) PA

JOHN PFOUTZ born c1717 in Rohrbach Germany, died c1790 (after 1791?) in Pfoutz Valley, Cumberland County (now Perry County) PA.

NOTE: In May 1741 John purchased 130 acres from Henry Haine (Hoehn).  The 130 acres were in Strasburg Township, Lancaster County PA adjoining John’s brother-in-law, Augustine Widder.  John was an innkeeper in Strasburg Village, a lender of money, and speculated in land.  By 1765, John owned land or held survey warrants in Strasburg Township PA, on the Great Wagon road in Frederick County VA, in Cumberland county PA, on Dunnings Creek in Bedfgord County PA, on Berrys Creek in Perry County PA, at the head of Cocalamus Creek in Juniata County, and a number of tracts in the Fork of the Susquehanna and Juniata Ricers, the present Pfoutz Valley area of Perry County, where he and at least four of his sons settled and prospered.  John does not apper in Lutheran records after 1744.

 

“Baron” John Pfoutz married (1) c1741 Anna Klein, died 1768 (sister of Leonard Kline of Lancaster Borough); they had six children:

 

1.  John Leonard Pfoutz (REV) born 1742 Strasburg Twp, Lancaster Co PA; died 1813 Jersey Shore, Lycoming County PA; married 1773 Mary Ann Crane.

 

2.  John Michael Pfoutz (REV) born 1744 Strasburg Twp, Lancaster Co PA; died 1827 Pfoutz Valley, Greenwood Township, Perry County PA; married Elizabeth Harter(?)  Michael was an active member of the Pfoutz Valley Evangelical Lutheran Church.

 

3.  John Pfoutz, Jr. (REV) born c1750 Strasburg Twp, Lancaster Co PA; died c1798 Penn’s Township, Northumberland County PA; married ? who died before 1790; they had only one son in the census of 1790.  (John Jr. has been confused with his brother John Leonard, who was also know as John Jr.)

 

4.  Maria Elizabeth Pfoutz born 1757 Strasburg Twp, Lancaster Co PA; died 1805 Liverpool Township, Cumberland County PA; married Frederick Rhinehart (Reinhardt?).  Maria was baptized into the Lutheran faith in 1774 in her 17th year of age.

 

5.  GEORGE PFOUTZ (REV) born c1758 Strasburg Twp, Lancaster Co PA; died 1833 Paint Township, Wayne-Holmes Counties, Ohio; married Ann ?; they owned 298 acres in Pfoutz Valley; sold it in Fall of 1801; next appeared in Harrison County Ohio in 1804; relatively wealthy when he died. (George moved to Ohio in 1801.)

 

6.  David Pfoutz (REV) born c1762 (1761?) Strasburg Twp, Lancaster Co PA; died 1823 (1821?) Millerstown, Perry County PA; married ? late and left six children, three of them minors (he wan an innkeeper in Millerstown for 20 years)

 

John Pfoutz then married (2) Margaret Bast, who died before 1785; they had ??? children, one being Israel Pfoutz.

GEORGE PFOUTZ born c1758 Strasburg Twp, Lancaster Co PA; died 1833 Paint Township, Wayne-Holmes Counties, Ohio; George was a miller.

 

George Pfoutz married (1) Sarah Woodrown(?); they had five children:

 

1.  SIMEON PFOUTZ born 4 January 1781 Pfoutz Valley, Cumberland County (Perry Co.) Greenwood Township PA, died 30 August 1856 in Barney's Run, Leidy Township (Kettle Creek), Clinton County PA.  Burial was in Pfoutz Burying Ground, Barney's Run, Clinton, Pa (near the Hall-Wertz Cemetery). Migration 1814 Kettle Creek, Leidy Twp., Clinton, Pa.  Simeon married Susannah "Susan" Minnick on 8 June 1794.  Simeon is in the Census of 1850 in Leidy.  Pfoutz Valley is in the fork of the Juniata and Susquehanna Rivers in Perry County according to Rand-McNally, however some claim the same name for the Pfoutz location in Leidy Township Clinton County.  Note: Simeon died from the bite of a rattlesnake which he held in his hands, demonstrating to a young friend the harmless nature of these venomous reptiles.

4.  Reuben Pfoutz born 1786, Pfoutz Valley, died 1859 Paint Township, Holmes County, Ohio; married Ann (Eagler?);  Reuben was a miller by trade.  (Descendents of Reuben may have spelled their name Pfouts)

 

5.  Sarah Pfoutz born ?, Pfoutz Valley, died ?; married Levi Edington. (Needs researched)

 

George Pfoutz married (2) Anne (Cole?); they had one child:

 

1.  George Pfoutz (Jr.) born c1793, Pfoutz Valley, died 1845 Holt County (or 1835 Mr. Eaton, Wayne County?), Missouri; married Sarah ?  George Jr. was a miller by trade, and had mills in Stark, Wayne and Holmes counties Ohio.  He was also a Justice of the Peace in Wayne County.  With his father and brother Reuben, they bought and sold a lot of land.  They were located on the Greenville Treaty Line where the three Counties of Stark, Wayne and Holmes meet.

 

NOTE: Deed of Jefferson County Ohio 11 February 1806 transferred a tract of land in Cross Creek, Jefferson County, Ohio from George and Anne Pfautz to Simeon Pfautz, son of George Pfautz, for one dollar ($1.00).  Simeon sold this land two months later to Philip Wiser.

1) EMMA LOUISA WERTZ b. 1846 (1844?) d. 1904 (Married Everett Franklin Hall - and they adopted Clarence Richard Hall (Wertz) from their siblings, Zachary Taylor Wertz & Phebe Ann Hall)

2) ZACHARIAH "ZACHARY" TAYLOR WERTZ B 1/1/1848 in Kettle Creek PA, D 6/16/1919 Halls Run PA-Noyes Twp, Clinton County. He married PHEBE ANN HALL b 1846, d 1928, and they had 14 children, including Clarence Richard, who they gave in adoption at birth to their siblings, Everett Franklin Hall and his wife, Emma Lousia Wertz Hall.

3) Mary Martha Wertz B 11/2/1849 D 1870

4) MATILDA FLORENCE WERTZ born 7 March 1852, died 27 August 1901; married JOHN LUTHER DOWNS Jr. born 1 September 1846 in Dublin Ireland, died 29 December 1909 in Newark Delaware. Matilda Wertz Downs was buried August 1901 in Cammal PA.  (John and Matilda’s daughter, Alice T. Downs, married Clarence Richard Hall (Wertz), her cousin.)

Note: There are several Pfoutz’ buried at Halls’ Run, past the old Hall-Wertz Farm out Barney’s Run Road (Needs research).  And I think there were Pfoutz buried in the Kettle Creek Cemetery that was moved to build the Bush Dam, but I don’t know to where they were moved.
